Internship students from Belarus go on biking tour to Poland under Unknown Europe project

A group of Belarusian students, who have qualified for an internship program in Poland under the Unknown Europe program, went to the neighboring country by bicycles, BelTA learnt from Sergei Koleda, a deputy chairman of the Grodno regional division of the Republican Tourist and Sports Union.

The second internship program for Belarusian students majoring in tourism business has started under the international technical assistance project, Unknown Europe. It is aimed at developing the infrastructure of the Augustow Canal both in the Belarusian and Polish frontier regions. Twenty-four students qualified for the two-week internship program organized in cooperation with the Suwalki Chamber of Agriculture and Tourism. The Belarusian students will get familiar with advanced tourism technologies, visit hotels, agro-tourism facility, a ski resort, Wigierski National Park and other monuments and landmarks.

This is the first time that internship students have gone on bicycles. They started from the Nemnovo lock on the Augustow Canal, where they got the bikes and camping equipment. On August 8 they got to the Rudavka Lesnaya border crossing point located on the Kuzhinets lock.

Rudavka Lesnaya is a water crossing point. There are plans to make it usable for pedestrians and cyclists. The participants of the program have become the first bicyclists who have crossed the border in this place.

It is quite possible that the bicycle route first tested by the participants of the internship program will be included into the trans-European tourist route, according to Sergei Koleda.

The Belarus-Poland Unknown Europe project is designed to run from 2008 to 2010. Belarus has received around Ђ440,000 under the international technical assistance project.
